With around twenty companies providing mains water around the UK it is not surprising that quality varies according to source. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is a term used for the combined content of all inorganic and organic substances contained in a liquid which are present in a molecular, ionized or micro-granular suspended form. TDS measurement is used as an aggregate indicator of the presence of a broad array of contaminants; in simple terms the lower the TDS the purer the water. London tap water might typically measure 500 TDS which means 500milligrams of impurities per litre. Purified water should measure below 20 TDS depending upon the source, possibly as low as zero.

Safe removal of contaminants from water requires a sophisticated combination of processes.
